As explained by ACT Power in their article “What Does Hermetically Sealed Mean?,” hermetic sealing refers to the airtight or gas-tight sealing of a system, preventing air or gas from entering or escaping over time. This makes hermetic sealing a critical option for applications requiring protection from extreme environments, such as vacuum processing, pressure vessels, or underwater devices.
In contrast, environmental sealing is sufficient when protection against dust or water particles is necessary. Environmental seals, often made from rubber, are used in mobile machinery, marine equipment, and aircraft, preventing contaminants from damaging electrical components. These seals ensure safe and efficient operation in high-pressure or particle-prone environments.
Hermetic sealing, typically composed of materials like glass, ceramic, or epoxy, offers even stronger protection by completely preventing any gas or liquid from passing through. The effectiveness of hermetic seals is measured in leakage rate values, ensuring they maintain their integrity under the highest pressures for long durations.
