As outlined in the publication “Technology Advances and Challenges in Hermetic Packaging for Implantable Medical Devices,” hermetic sealing remains a critical element in the design of implantable electronics. While no material is perfectly impermeable, advancements in hermetic packaging are enabling safer, longer-lasting medical implants by minimizing gas and moisture ingress.
Hermeticity, in practical terms, refers to the level at which a package can prevent gas penetration. Implantable medical devices require high levels of hermetic sealing to protect sensitive electronics from moisture and environmental contaminants, which can lead to corrosion, short circuits, or total failure over time.
